School trip – IMPORTANT (LEAVING SCHOOL AT 8.30AM)
On Friday 10th July we will all be going on our school trip to Llyn Padarn and Electric mountain at Llanberis. All pupils should come in their school tops. They will require a packed lunch, drinks and a waterproof jacket, all placed in a rucksack, which pupils can then carry easily on their backs. All pupils need to wear suitable footwear (no sandals or slip on shoes) otherwise they will not be allowed to go on the bus tour beneath the mountain. We will return at approximately 6pm. All parents will receive a text message with a more precise time as we get nearer home.
Impact schools
Darren Mayor came to school in his double decker bus on Thursday 2nd July. Pupils enjoyed a tour of the displays in the bus and took part in different activities and finished off with a quiz. Winning pupils went home with animal shaped balloons!
Year 6 transition to high school
Jan Jones came to visit pupils in Year 6 to discuss their move up to high school and to alleviate any worries or answer any questions they might have. They will be attending Llanfyllin high school on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th July.
Art project
Local artist Mary Cunnah will be coming to talk to the pupils on Monday 6th July, about the upcoming art project to be held in the village church, which runs from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th September.
Year 6 evening out
Pupils in Year 6 will be taken out by the teachers on Tuesday 7th July. They will be leaving straight after school and returning to the village by 7.30pm
Eco Schools
Esyllt Davies will be visiting the school on Wednesday 8th July to assess our application for Green Flag status.
Bag2school
Our next collection for any unwanted clothing, paired shoes, hats, belts, handbags, ties and soft toys will be at 9am on Thursday 9th July.
Rounders
Some pupils in Key Stage 2 will be playing rounders at Llangedwyn from 12-2.45pm on Tuesday 14th July. They will need a packed lunch, drinks and PE kit. Those pupils involved will be informed next week.
Drum performance
Matthew Shepherd’s drum pupils will be putting on a performance in the hall at 3.30pm on Wednesday 15th July. Everyone is welcome.
Leavers service/Awards ceremony
This will be held at 2.30pm on Thursday 16th July in the village hall.
Piano lessons
Patrick Gough is hoping to return to teach piano in the Autumn Term.

Please see overleaf a letter from Mary Morris, who has very kindly carried out research on the school’s previous attendance registers. We are very grateful for all the work Mary and Carys have already done and are going to do in the near future.
New Rope String Band fundraiser
Donations of cakes and raffle prizes would be most appreciated for the forthcoming fundraiser taking place in the village hall at 7.30pm on Saturday 11th July. Someone will be in the village hall from 3pm onwards for people to leave their donations.

Why I was searching for them?
2014 – A weekend of various activities took place at Llansilin to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the ‘Great War’ when 31 young men (and others) from the area went to war and never returned home. To honour these young men an Exhibition was held in the church. This was when my research began with ‘how old were these young men when they first went to school, when did they leave? School registers, Log books, etc, where are they and where do I begin. I visited the Denbighshire Archives office at Ruthin where all old historical documents etc of the county have been housed for many years. Just one notebook relating to the school, the Headmaster’s notes 1904-1970. Excellent records had been recorded of both Moelfre and Rhiwlas schools. Contact was then made by telephone and email to the National Library of Wales and other Archive offices in Shrewsbury, I even checked Oswestry Library! Nothing, all very disappointing. My last hope was Rhian Headteacher, Ysgol Bro Cynllaith, ‘Had she got any documentation in the school relating to the past such as Registers, log books, etc, etc, BINGO! What excitement!
Cary Evans and myself were very touched and grateful to Rhian when we visited the school she very kindly allowed us to take these Registers home. We needed advice, what do we do next? As a volunteer in the Archive section of Oswestry Library I contacted Tony Harrison, Head of the section and Sandy Best (Historian). They were both enthralled by the registers and all the history they contained. Tony kindly offered to photograph all the entries in the Registers on to a memory stick, Gillian Fynes (volunteer) transferred them on to a disc. The Master disc is held at the Library with another disc ‘under the counter’ for when the time comes to go public. When an enquiry is made at the Library desk the disc can be viewed on a machine in the Library, this disc must be viewed only in the Library and not taken away.
Discs were given to the school, and are now the property of Ysgol Bro Cynllaith.
Both Carys and myself handed the Registers back to Rhian on Thursday 19th March.
Rhian will now discuss what’s next at the governors meeting after Easter. If they so wish Tony would be happy to photograph the log books, etc and follow the previous procedure. If requested, Oswestry Library Archives section would be able to produce more discs.
These Registers and Log Books, etc are invaluable for researchers of family and local history. The earlier register 1873-1911 is very fragile, the second one 1911-1953 is in better condition. For safe keeping and for the interest of future researchers perhaps this exciting collection should be transferred to the Denbighshire County Archives Office, Ruthin Gaol, Ruthin.
Over the past 6 months since I started by research I need to record that all Record Offices, Libraries and persons I contacted were extremely helpful, not forgetting the help of the excellent Volunteers of the Archive section of Oswestry Library.

UPDATE
Discs are available from the school, Llansilin Church and Oswestry Library for anyone who is interested in viewing them. Following a Governors meeting it was also agreed that previous Log Books from the school would be transferred to disc in order to preserve the information for future generations.
